A son of destiny takes birth in a prison-cell in Mathura. He is transported in secret across the river Yamuna to a little-known cowherd village called Vrindavan. Here, under the tutelage of Radha, he learns to sing, to dance, to play the flute, to love.
Krishna and Balarama arrive in Mathura in time for the midwinter fair. They are hosted in the city by Sauptika, head of the secret movement that seeks to overthrow Kamsa. The plan is for the brothers to sneak into the palace courtyard on the day of the fair, win their battles against the king's prizefighters, and kill the king... but of course, nothing in life goes exactly as planned.
The hand of Radha is guided by a deeper force. Radha herself has to claim her place as a daughter of destiny, and guide her little prince through a hazardous path that leads to an impregnable city on the shores of the western sea.

The Mahabharata Character Guides Omnibus became my favorite section as it helped me understand the complex motivations behind each character's actions. Definitely worth reading. I generally don't like crime fiction all that much, but this one kept me reading through the day. Something about the Malgudi-like atmosphere that is present in Amaravati. I like Krishna Shastri, but identify more with Venkat Reddy. Lovely little story.Definitely worth reading. Excellent reads! I'm a long-time crime fiction reader, and I am impressed by the variety on offer in these four books. Even the two Birbal books are dissimilar enough from each other to keep the reader's interest. Murder in Amaravati is a slow-burn, Banquet on the Dead is urban and fast-paced, Crows of Agra is a historical, and Tree Bears Witness is an impossible murder. Something for everyone.Excellent reads!
