When was the last time you got 14 books in a bundle? Yeah, I don't remember either. Some of these are small and some are proper book-length, but that is to be expected because not all characters in the Mahabharata are equally significant. I especially enjoyed the book on Dhritarashtra - so often he is mentioned as a sidenote. Here it was nice to delve into his life a little bit more deeply. Enjoying the flexibility of reading these books anywhere I want.
I loved the Arjuna vs Karna dynamic in these guides. Also the hidden story of love and discomfort between Arjuna and Draupadi. Did they? Didn't they? How did they feel about each other at different parts of the story? Especially at the end when Yudhishthir makes the cruel judgement on Draupadi? Laced with hidden gems like these, but also covers the full arc of the characters. Great buy!
I found it strange that relatively minor characters like Gandhari get a guide but Vidura - who is one of the main characters - is missing. Perhaps the author thought there wasn't enough to cover him completely? Or maybe he is planning to do it in the future? In any case, docking one star for skipping Vidura. Vidura is my favourite character, so I was sad to see him not here.
I've never before read such in-depth articles on Bhishma and Drona. I've always thought they were side-characters at best. The other surprise was that there is a whole guide describing the Mahabharata War in the book titled 'Kurukshetra'. Everything is covered in so much detail, in a very readable and re-readable format. Highly recommended!
