Poetry in Bollywood: Tum ko Dekha toh Yeh Khayal Aaya

abstract-love

This is another famous number from the 1982 movie, Saath Saath. That was an era in which Jagjit Singh was in his pomp, writing ghazals for mainstream Bollywood and making a good fist of it. Along with his wife, Chitra, Jagjit brought ghazals out of the confines of musical ‘mehfils’ into the living rooms of middle class India.

Javed Akhtar was the original lyricist. If the translation doesn’t ‘do it’ for you, it’s only because his boots are giant-sized.

Hindi Lyrics

English ‘Translation’

Tum ko dekha
Toh yeh khayaal aaya
Zindagi dhoop
Tum ghana saaya

aaj phir dil ne
ek tamanna ki
aaj phir dil ko
hum ne samjhaaya
zindagi dhoop
tum ghana saaya

Tum chale jaaoge
Toh sochenge
Hum ne kya khoya
Hum ne kya paaya
zindagi dhoop
Tum ghana saaya

Hum jise gun
Guna nahin sakte
Waqt ne aisa
Geet kyun gaaya
zindagi dhoop
Tum ghana saaya

Tumko dekha
Toh yeh khayal aaya
Zindagi dhoop
Tum ghana saaya

When our eyes meet I hear
A whisper in my ear:
I wander, withered and frayed
Without you, my friend, my shade

Again today my heartstring
Croons a glum tune of longing
Placate her again I did
With words those soft voices bid:
I wander, withered and frayed
Without you, my friend, my shade

Alone I’m just a shadow
Blanked by distress, by sad woe
Ever I shall ask the frost
Have I won, or have I lost?
I wander, withered and frayed
Without you, my friend, my shade

I sit on the night wind’s wing
Writing songs I shall not sing
Time passes by, merrily
And says to me, verily:
You wander, withered and frayed
Without her, your friend, your shade

When our eyes meet I hear
A whisper in my ear:
I wander, withered and frayed
WIthout you, my friend, my shade

  1. Hello Sharath , if you go by the simplistic translation and not try to read the subtle, untold then the first stanza roughly translates to ” when I saw you , a thought came to my mind that life is full of scorching heat and you are a shade from the heat” . . I know , I am making it very simple , almost literal and unless you intend to read between the lines , what I have given meets the eyes (that is of mine).
